About Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey is one of the most popular singers in the world. She has sold more than 220 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. She was born on March 27, 1969 (listen to the happy birthday song used in celebration), in the Huntington area of Long Island, New York. While her mother, Patricia, was a former musician and opera singer, her father, Alfred, worked in an airline company as an engineer. Mariah was the youngest child in the home with two elder siblings.

It was a hard time for the Carey family during Mariah’s childhood. Her mother was of Irish origin and a white American, so her family disowned their daughter when she married Mariah’s father, an African American of Venezuelan descent. Due to racial tension, Mariah’s parents failed to integrate into the community and faced several challenges in supporting their family. Unknown racist goons set their car on fire and poisoned their pet dog during their stay in Long Island.

Soon after Mariah was born, her parents divorced, and she, with her elder brother, was raised by her mom. Patricia worked hard and went through several job changes to make ends meet and support her daughter’s dream of being a successful singer. Mariah was greatly influenced by her mother and started showing her talent as a singer at just three years of age when she was spending most of her days at home trying to copy Patricia’s voice.
In her elementary school days, she impressed her teachers with her talent for writing lyrics and poetry while getting excellent scores in arts, literature, and music. She grew up listening to her mother, who was also her vocal trainer. And although Patricia herself was a former opera singer, she never influenced her daughter to pursue opera as her career.

When Mariah was in high school, she often missed her school days due to her busy schedule as a demo singer. She was active in the local music scene in Long Island, which led her to work closely with eminent musicians like Ben Margulies and Gavin Christopher.

When she was finally able to leave home at the age of 18, she moved to the manhattan area of New York and started living in a one-room studio apartment with four other girl roommates. There she worked several odd jobs before being able to land her first job as a backup singer for Brenda K. Starr. Impressed by her singing, Brenda forwarded a tape of Mariah to Tommy Mottola of Sony Music, and this is the point where her life changed for good. Read more about Mariah Carrey on Wikipedia.
